I wish I had read this book before getting started on my journey. Probably would have saved me money (by not buying other books that didn't have as much weighty information). It's realistic, Q&A and really gets you in the flow of no/low budget filmmaking vs a 'syrupy" overview that doesn't take you through it. I felt like I was "shadowing" a producer in this.
Author has both the academic and practical experience to know what independent producers need. She gets to the point and makes practical points that make a positive difference in production. I attended one of her small group, three day seminars in NYC as well. Thank you for writing this book and supporting it with seminars and a website.
This is the first film production book I've read that includes all the devilish details that I suspected were lurking in my dreams of making a movie. I especially liked Ms. Ryan's recommendations for budgeting the preproduction planning time with your crew. Most sample budgets don't seem to allow for this planning, which can save many train wrecks from happening during production. I'd like to see a similar book about promotion and distribution, but this one will give me plenty to chew on for now.
As someone who has produced a relatively big short film, and trying to do my first feature, I found it useful. Well, I gave it to one of my producers who has less experience and for him it's invaluable. But if you've already produced a feature this book is not for you. I wish it had some sample documents in it.
If i knew that I couldnt change the LOC(location) of where I am in the book to pages like normal books I wouldnt have purchased this. This is ridiculous and now I need to count pages and compare the ebook to a real book for accuracy. this made the experience a pain and not worth the money and my time
This is an excellent book. It needs to be updated to reflect the demise of celluloid as a primary shooting medium and also to address the ramifications of digital distribution but there is a ton of knowledge and insight here. This book is generous in the best sense of the word.

I have produced ten independent features, and have often been asked to recommend a book to teach people about what I do. This book will now be my immediate first choice. So many how-to guides to producing get far more details wrong than right-- Producer to Producer is as accurate a guide to the current independent producing process as I have seen to date.In interest of full disclosure, I have known Maureen Ryan for several years, have worked with her on one film, and have spent a good deal of time with her on the festival circuit, when our films were fortunate enough to screen and to be honored together from Sundance in 2008 to the Academy Awards in 2009. Like Maureen, I also teach producing at a college level, and found many of the lessons that I teach to my students explained fully and quite clearly within these pages. In my classes, I hand out a series of documents to my students-- most importantly, the AICP budgeting form-- many of which Maureen makes available to readers as a free download. For anyone interested in making an independent feature, this book is essential.
