amazingly dense with more info addressing a wider range of topics than any other wilderness survival book i've encountered, awesome. but it also has some funny stuff resulting from obvious cut & paste, best taken with a grain of salt and cross-referenced with other manuals because it contains curious tidbits like: (regarding beavers) "beavers are not really great engineers because sometimes they get squashed by a tree" or (regarding sharks) "Do not bring your dog into the water as its running and splashing may attract sharks".... uh, OK. But still a fantastic and entertaining book, not wonderfully organized but totally rich with all kinds of information and every page bursting with informative illustrations and diagrams (the cover offers preview of the interior's visual style, has a definite "show don't tell" flavor), leafing through it's pages feels like treasure hunting, a person could spend days exploring everything in here, definitely a unique field guide anyone interested in outdoor preparedness will love, check it out.
This is a great book to keep as a reference for recreational or survival camping. This book is PACKED with information and survival camping tips. I only gave it 4 stars instead of 5 for two reasons: 1. This is a smaller format book, 5.3 x 8.3 inches, by 1.5 thick. The format is so small, it's VERY difficult at times to clearly see the small hand-drawn images and read the small text, that's in a handwriting font, that's with the pictures. 2. Because of the small format, the binding fell apart within a few days of receiving this book. There's a larger format version of this book available that's 8.5 x 11 x 1. I would recommend the larger format of this book. I also have the larger format, and the larger format book is definitely a 5 star book that any camper or prepper should own.
The author has clearly spent years assembling the information in this volume. He has attempted to cover all sorts of wilderness activities. As the title suggests it covers more than just survival and along with the colorful layout I think would make a great book for children who are showing an interest in the outdoors.I bought this book to add to my library of wilderness survival titles. From that point of view I found the layout a little chaotic. It was hard to navigate around to find specific info on a given subject in some instances.I think most of the survival info has been gleaned from other publications so if you are purchasing the book just for that I would go with the US Army's FM21-76 Survival manual or the SAS Survival Handbook by John Wiseman.If you are after an entertaining, colorful reference book on a host of wilderness subjects then this book will hit the mark.
They are not kidding when they say ULTIMATE! This book has everything you'd ever want to know about the outdoors! I bought it used. I'm not sure how easy it is to find, which is a shame. It has information about plants to avoid and ones that are okay to eat...it's just full of everything! The same author has other books that are not as detailed, so it just depends on what you're looking for. I'd recommend it!
This book has around 1080 pages, and PACKED with information and colorful pictures. But it is not very well organized. Various subjects are strewn around the book instead of being in one location. And I have found that some page references that tell you to go to another page are sometimes inaccurate. For example, in one part of the book it said to go to another page for more information on spiders, but when I went to that page, there was no information on spiders. I had to hunt around for the information on spiders, and it was frustrating. So while the book contains useful camping / survival information, it is not very well organized to aid the reader to locate further information. All related information should be kept together. This would make the book very good. As it is, I struggle to give it 3 stars.
I gave this book as a gift to an avid camper. Wasn't sure how it would be received but she started reading it immediately and we went camping the next week. My friend the camper actively used some of the suggestions that week. It really came in handy. The book is great for people who think that there is nothing left to learn or who just like to test methods to see if something works. You too can be a Mr. know it all Rocky! Not as much on catching fish as I had hoped.
I really like this book and have bought and gifted it a few times.
Overall a very good instructional book. In some areas it is very thorough but in other areas it is somewhat shallow treatment. OVerall this book works well with others I already have in providing the information I seek.
